Old scanners make great large format digital cameras: The Scanner Photography Project

Michael Golembewski writes on Slashdot:?? “For the past three years, I’ve been taking apart cheap secondhand flatbed scanners and turning them into homemade large format digital cameras. They are well over 100 mexapixel in resolution, and produce results that are both similar to and significantly different from traditional digital and conventional cameras.”? His primary site “scannerphotography.com” is down from being flooded, apparently,? but check out the mirrored site for more details.
The distortions from the movement of the scanner as it captures the image produces interesting and even quite beautiful effects.? Although the examples in the gallery are derived from black-and-white scans,? it would be fascinating to see what a good quality color scanner would produce.? It’s a bit tricky to take the scanners apart and reconfigure them for the purpose of using them as cameras,? but it seems do-able.? I’m planning to experiment with this technique and would like to hear from others who take it on, as well!
